GYMS and fitness studios have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, but one personal trainer has put his free time and money to good use and opened up a gym in his back garden.

Lee Heywood spent five years as a fitness coach at The Village Hotel but when lockdown restrictions forced the closure of gyms across the country he came up with a plan.

A dream holiday to Dubai with his wife Nicola and daughter Grace had been cancelled and the couple decided to invest their travel money on a garden renovation, creating an outdoor gym and workout space called Kaizen Fitness.

Lee, who is 37 and lives on Pickmere Street in Sankey Bridges, said: “I wanted to serve my local community in its time of need and create an outdoor training space with its own little mission.

“It is a safe and private area where people can be empowered to improve their physical health and mental wellbeing.

“All the risk assessments are up to date and I do a video consultation and fitness assessment which analyses movements, before coming up with a training plan.”

Lee is currently offering NHS discount for key workers after his wife Nicola had to give up her work in the events industry and became a vaccine co-ordinator in the town.
