“I am absolutely delighted to have been elected to the borough council, as well as the parish council,” he said.

“I feel extremely proud to be the town’s first British Bangladeshi councillor.

“I am so, so grateful with the support people have given to me.

“I will do everything that I can to repay the trust people have put in me with their votes.

“I just want to thank each and every voter who put their trust in me – it means so much to me.

“I will do my best for you.”

Mr Hussain is also the secretary of Warrington Ethnic Communities Association, which organises the town’s Mela.

And he took the opportunity to highlight his pride at the borough’s cultural diversity and the way the Mela has grown in size since the first one in 2012.

“I am really, really delighted because when the Mela started we attracted around 250 to 300 people, now we see people come in their thousands,” he added.

“Other towns have also used our event in Warrington as a blueprint.

“It is really, really good to bring everyone together to showcase the town’s cultural diversity.

“Warrington is a wonderful place to live with amazing communities.”
