Young rugby players will be pedalling fast this June as they try to raise much needed funds for their Sunday league team.

Members of Bank Quay Bulls Under 7s will be getting on their bikes at the playing fields in Dallam at 10am on Saturday, June 14 and by clocking up the miles they are hoping to clock up the pounds.

The 20-mile round trip to Spike Island will take in The Ferry Tavern and Sankey Valley Park with the young sport stars cycling as far as they can if they can’t manage the full distance.

Team manager Becky Kay, whose son Bradley plays for the Under 7s, said: “We are a new team and looking to raise as much money as we can for new kits and supplies.

“With Covid-19 taking so much away from these young children, it’s amazing how they’ve thrown themselves into each training session and how they conducted themselves in their first match last Sunday.

“These children are the future of the sport and they deserve to be able to continue to play while having the best opportunities available.”

Seven-year-old Bradley, who is in year two at Bewsey Lodge School Primary School, will be completing the full 20 miles as he and his teammates try to raise £2,000 for the Bulls.

Becky said: “Bradley learnt to ride a bike when he was three – he’s always had great balance and co-ordination – but it’s a very long way for a seven-year-old.

“We will be doing some smaller practice routes over the next few weeks and build up to the big 20-mile trip in June.”
