Stockton Heath Judo Club has opened its doors for the first time in more than a year, welcoming back people of all ages who enjoy the sport.

Carl Finney, who has been involved with the Olympic sport for more than 47 years, was forced to close at the start of the first Covid-19 lockdown.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the sport, virtual judo classes weren’t possible during lockdowns but now that restrictions have eased and children can attend organised groups and classes once again – adult classes will resume later this month – Stockton Heath Scout Hut on Parkgate Road will host the sessions every Thursday evening.

Carl said: “Judo helps to build confidence and self esteem as well as resilience, which is extremely important at the moment.

“It encourages children and adult to develop self control and self discipline and respect is key.

“Judo is very difficult to direct over the internet and can’t really be done virtually – it’s just not the same.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to doing it how it’s meant to be done.

“There’s been a great response to the news that we’re back this week and I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone to classes again.”

Carl, who has two Commonwealth gold medals to his name, holds two classes on a Thursday – one at 5.15pm for beginners and an advanced one at 6pm – for children aged five through to adult.

He also delivers taster sessions to children in schools across the region with Judo Education, providing youngsters in more than 500 schools the opportunity to give the sport a go.
