IT is more than 50 years since work started on one of the major routes through Warrington.

This great photograph was taken in 1967.

That was when demolition work took place on houses around the Sankey Green area near to Bank Quay.

They were bulldozed to make way for the creation of the £1 million Sankey Way carriageway.

Work on the road started later in the year.

It included the current subway to take pedestrians from Wellfield Street in Whitecross to Sankey Bridges on the other side of the road.

Houses in Bramhall Street, pictured, were among those to be pulled down in order for the new road to be built.
