PRINCE Phillip has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The prince was the longest-serving consort in British history, with his service including two visits to Warrington.
He first came to the town in 1979, when he toured the new Golden Square development and visited the Town Hall alongside the Queen on November 7.
And the pair returned together in 2012, when they opened the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.
During his second visit, the Duke of Edinburgh helped to bury a time capsule at the state-of-the-art leisure, health and library facility.
Prince Phillip married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became the Queen.
The couple went on to have four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He died ‘passed away peacefully’ at Windsor Castle this morning, Friday.
A statement released by the palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
“Further announcements will made in due course.
“The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
