10-storey tower block in Warrington town centre could be approved

Plans for an eight to 10-storey housing unit on the corner of Bank Street and Mersey Street will be discussed by councillors on Wednesday.

The scheme, on land near to the former DW Gym, would see 80 flats created as well as offices and shops.

The existing buildings would be demolished.

Ten per cent of the homes would be affordable while developers have agreed a £100,000 contribution to health schemes.

The current view

There is no parking at the site, but planners said that is acceptable as it is close to the Time Square multi-storey car park.

Thirty of the flats will be one-bedroom and 50 will have two bedrooms.

The planning documents state: "It is recognised that this development will secure a high quality addition to the existing regeneration of the wider area and will be a positive addition to the streetscene on Mersey Street, a main arterial route through the town centre."

If approved, it would be the latest large scale housing development to be built in the town.

Apartments on the former Kwik Save site are set to be completed this year.

And despite delays, developers say more than 500 flats will be finished next year on the John Street development near to Central Station.

The meeting of the development management committee takes place on Wednesday and councillors have been recommended to approve the plans.
