THE coronavirus outlook in Warrington continues to improve as the downward trend in new cases continues.

During the seven days up to April 3, which is the latest data available, only 73 infections were recorded in the town.

This equates to an infection rate of 34.8 cases per every 100,000 residents, which is the 115th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

These latest figures show a significant fall compared to the previous week up to March 27, during which 114 new cases were identified at a rate of 54.3.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (April 4-7) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 30 (10 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates, while 278 (88 per cent) have seen a fall and seven are unchanged.

Corby in Northamptonshire continues to have the highest rate in England (142.6), followed by Wakefield (106.8) and Barnsley (106.1).
