LABOUR Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols has apologised for the ‘offence and hurt’ she has caused to the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community.
The politician posted a tweet – including a photo of a leaflet – showing her campaigning for the party's Orford council candidates in May’s all-out elections.
The leaflet said ‘delivering for you in tough times’ and highlighted a range of issues, including ‘dealing with traveller incursions’.
But concerns were raised over the leaflet, which sparked a response from Ms Nichols.
Great evening back out on the doors with the Orford massive, checking in with local residents about issues and concerns, and speaking to them about their priorities ahead of the upcoming council elections!🌹 pic.twitter.com/CiN5zCDDD9

In a tweet she said: “I genuinely wasn't aware of the meaning of "incursion" or its negative connotation until this morning.
“I've flagged it with the Labour Group so we can sort new materials, and sincerely apologise for the hurt caused.”
Ms Nichols has also issued a statement on the matter.
She said: “I would like to unreservedly apologise for the offence and hurt that I have caused to the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community.
“I have spoken to the local Labour Party, the leaflet has been withdrawn and the leaflet will be destroyed.
“I regret that this leaflet has been distributed in the town.
“The leaflet is not in line with my personal values or those of the Labour Party.”
The Warrington Guardian understands that a current Labour borough councillor is among those to be extremely offended by the leaflet.
