A mental health nurse, who used candles to help him relax when he was dealing with his own mental health issues, has turned a hobby into a fledgling business.

Two years ago, Jason Mitchell turned to burning fragrant candles in an attempt to ease the daily pressures of work and study and an unhappy relationship.

The Kinsgwood entrepreneur, who works at Hollins Park in Winwick, quickly realised that candles were expensive and he decided to invest in a start-up kit to make his own.

The Kingswood Candle Company was born.

Jason, who lives on Dovecote Green, said: “My gran used to burn candles and I remember it always used to smell lovely and be very relaxing.

“Making something from scratch and crafting them into a finished product gave me a sense of achievement.

“I started filling empty jars with my candles and one day I came home and my mum had sold one of them to a friend.

“I’ve not looked back since and quickly picked up orders from friends and family.”

The 27-year-old’s first two batches of candles were gingerbread and pomegranate and he is now expanding his fragrances to include some more unusual aromas.

Jason, who is a former pupil of Great Sankey High School, said: “I’m working on one called monkey farts at the moment which isn’t as strange as it sounds.

“It’s a sweet smelling candle which is a bit like candy floss.

“I’ve realised that everyone has different fragrances that they like and don’t like so I don’t necessarily need to like it first.”
