A £736,000 scheme to improve one of Warrington's most rundown car parks should start next month.

The Forge Car Park in Stockton Heath is set to be extended and resurfaced.

The current facility is riddled with pot holes and is often packed at busy periods.

The refurbishment will see 24 new car parking spaces added, taking land used by the former toilet block which was demolished in January.

Councillors are due to agree the tender for their works when they meet at cabinet on Monday.

Documents state: "The council regularly receives complaints from the public, ward members and MPs

about the general condition of the car park and these complaints have increased significantly over the past several years.

"A relatively small amount of money is spent each year ‘patching’ the car park, however, this does not address the overall poor condition of the car park.

"It is proposed to extend the existing car park for up to 24 vehicles as part of the overall refurbishment of the car park and demolition of the toilet block."

When the tender has been agreed, construction will start in March and April and is set to be finished by August.

Council officers say traders will be kept in touch with the progress as will residents using the car park.

The footpath from the lower car park to London Road, close to St Thomas' church, will not be affected by the extension.
