JOE Philbin will become the latest to wear the Warrington number 13 jersey when the 2021 season starts.

After The Wire revealed their squad numbers on Thursday, the homegrown prop was moved to fill the number vacated by the recently-departed Ben Murdoch-Masila.

As Wire supporters of a certain age will know, however, he will not be the first Philbin to wear the primrose and blue 13.

Barry Philbin (no relation) did so with distinction in the 1970s after being brought to the club from Swinton by Alex Murphy to link up with his brother Mike, a winger.

A real workhorse of a loose forward in what many consider to be one of the club's greatest ever teams, Philbin helped Warrington win five trophies – including the Club Championship and the Challenge Cup – during the 1973-74 season.

He even won the Harry Sunderland Trophy for his display in the 13-12 Championship final win over St Helens that season.

Philbin also started at 13 in the 1975 Challenge Cup Final loss to Widnes at Wembley Stadium.

In all, he scored 14 tries and two field goals in 91 appearances for Warrington before moving on to join Salford in 1978.
