A PRIMARY school is hoping to improve the safety of pupils by installing gates on a private road alongside the building.

Winwick CofE Primary School has submitted plans to gate off the road, which is accessed via Myddleton Lane and leads to the school’s car park.

According to documents submitted by school governors as part of the application, the road is a safety issue during pupil drop off and pick up times.

At present, it is also vulnerable to unwanted vehicle usage after school hours and is in desperate need of resurfacing.

The documents state: “The proposal is to improve the vehicle and pedestrian safety along the private road that is used to access the school’s car park at the rear of the property.

“Firstly, it is proposed to install swing gate vehicle barriers at either end of the private road, which are to be locked at specified times to eliminate traffic and ensure child safety when arriving at and leaving the site.

“Secondly, to improve the current condition of the schools existing car park, it is the intention to erect a 2.4metre high-security mesh fence around its perimeter, two sets of manual vehicular gates and manual pedestrian gates.

“Thirdly, the current condition of the road and car park surface is poor and in need of pothole repairs and resurfacing, including line markings for car park spaces.”

A separate document adds: “Currently, all vehicle access to the school car park is from Myddleton Lane to a private road, which leads to an unsecure car park at the rear of the school.

“This provides issues with security and unwanted use by vehicles not associated with the school use.

“The proposed works to the existing car park and road will eliminate traffic from being able to park up and loiter.”

All new gates and any replacement fencing required will be similar to those already used on the site and with a maximum height of 2.4metres.
