CHRIS Hill's Testimonial match will be Warrington Wolves' only pre-season friendly ahead of the 2021 Super League campaign.

Newly-promoted Leigh Centurions, from whom The Wire signed their current co-captain in 2011, are set to provide the opposition at The Halliwell Jones Stadium and unless Covid restrictions change dramatically, the match looks set to be played behind closed doors.

Full details of the match are yet to be confirmed but head coach Steve Price expects it to be held "one or two weeks" before the scheduled start of the new season on March 25.

"We’re going to have Chris Hill’s testimonial and that will be our only friendly," he said.

"We’re still waiting on the fixtures so once we get them, we’ll have a clearer update on when that will be.

"I imagine it will be one or two weeks prior to the kick-off."

The squad returned to training last month despite the country being in a national lockdown to help bring down Covid infection rates, with elite sport given the all-clear to continue.

With the season still just under eight weeks away, it will be among their longer pre-season campaigns but this one still follows a similar pattern – a period of strength and conditioning before moving to more skills-based training.

Price says the time to make that transition is close but it has not yet arrived.

"We’ll move to specific training over the next week-and-a-half to two weeks," he said.

"At the moment though, it’s still about grinding hard.

"The boys have been class since they came back. They had a good, extended break.

"It’s unfortunate we can’t do things we’ve done in the past such as army camps or community challenges due to Covid and the financial restraints on the club.

"It is what it is – we’ve got a tight bubble at our training facility and we just have to keep our heads down."
