WARRINGTON and Halton Green Party is targeting its first borough council seat in this year’s all-out elections.

Voters are due to go to the polls on May 6 where every seat in the town will be up for grabs.

The party’s first parish councillor in Warrington, Robin Wilson, was elected to Stockton Heath Parish Council in 2008 and served for four years.

Currently, it has two parish councillors in the town – Steph Davies in Walton and Sarah Williamson in Great Sankey.

Ms Williamson was previously a Labour parish councillor, but left the party last year to join the Greens.

She will be standing for the Greens at parish and borough council level in the upcoming elections.

Party leader Lyndsay McAteer – who will be standing in Stockton Heath – confirmed her party will be putting between six and 12 candidates forward in the borough council election.

She is confident of success for the party but did not wish to say which ward it will be targeting most.

She believes targeting is ‘currently peripatetic’, largely due to electoral uncertainties.

“We are confident that the Greens will win at least one borough council seat in the local elections,” she added.

“There is a strong case for making postal votes a priority.

“In effect, it would have been better to go with 100 per cent postal votes, but realistically, I’m not certain that this could be organised in time for a May election.

“The Government has issued guidance in the last few days instructing activists not to do any door to door campaigning or leafleting.

“If an election cannot be contested safely and properly, it should be delayed until it can be.

“There are confusing messages being heard at different levels.

“Our party wants to see an election in May, but it needs to be conducted in a manner that is fair and equitable to all parties.

“A short delay, if necessary, could be the most sensible option.”
