THE latest figures show a sharp drop in the number of new coronavirus cases in Warrington.

While still high, the cases are at their lowest point of 2021 so far.

The latest numbers from Public Health England shows 1030 people tested positive in the past seven days.

That is a case rate of 490.4 per 100,000 people.

The previous seven days showed 1,463 people testing positive with a rate of 696.6.

The figures, for the seven days to January 18, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (January 19-22) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Warrington Hospital is currently caring for 220 people, with 27 in intensive care.
