Cine film of Warrington Wolves matches in 1960s and 1970s

THIS is action from the second half of the first match to appear in our exclusive new series.

Barry Philbin and Dave Cunliffe can be seen scoring tries in the final league game of The Wire's trophy-laden 1973-74 season against Leigh at Wilderspool Stadium on April 15, 1974.

Player-coach Alex Murphy, aged 34, is at the heart of both tries with his ball distribution skills.

Dave Chisnall's chemistry and link-up play with Murphy is there for all to see, while Kevin Ashcroft, Clive Jones and Alan Whittle are also prominent in this clip.

As reported with episode 1, this final league game of the campaign led into Warrington's first Challenge Cup Final victory for 19 years and the Club Championship success.

Leigh were beaten 27-16 in what was Warrington's 10th match in 30 days - the congestion resulting from their outstanding cup runs.

That 73/74 season Wire beat Featherstone Rovers 4-0 in the Captain Morgan Trophy Final at Salford, Rochdale Hornets 27-16 in the Player's No6 Trophy Final at Wigan, Featherstone 24-9 in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley and St Helens 13-12 in the Club Championship Final at Wigan.
