THE brightness of a huge new advertising billboard in Manchester Road has left nearby residents fuming.

The digital sign was recently erected as a replacement for the old wooden one which previously stood in the same spot next to Warrington Motor Parts at the junction with Kingsway North.

The old advertisement board caused little annoyance for nearby residents, but its replacement has kicked up something of a storm.

This is due to the light it emits late at night, which not only illuminates the board, but the houses surrounding it.

Pictures submitted by one resident shows light from the advert shining through windows and lighting up rooms.

The resident said: “This new screen is so bright it’s illuminating all the houses opposite and even some down Queens Avenue at the side.

“None of the residents received any notice of intention giving us the chance to oppose this change, and yet it’s gone ahead.

“Who approved this and who granted planning permission without any consideration to the people living here?”

In response to residents’ anger, Warrington Borough Council says it will investigate whether the brightness of the advert is in breach of any planning conditions.

A spokesman said: “This has not been previously reported to the council as an enforcement complaint.

“A new case has therefore now been opened and it will be investigated.

“There are several planning conditions relating to the operation of the sign which will now be checked for compliance.”
