A DETERMINED schoolgirl with cerebral palsy is not letting her condition hold her back as she learns to ice skate, ride a bike and even work as one of Santa's elves.
Grappenhall Heys Primary School pupil Aya Al-Rawi has started the new year on a high following some inspirational achievements.
The 10-year-old, who lives in High Legh, was born in Warrington Hospital and doctors did not know if she would be able to walk, talk or eat as she grew up.
She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy which affects the balance of her lower limbs.
Mum Yussur explained: "She uses a waking frame to move around, which has obviously caused a lot of challenges for her.
"But, Aya's attitude is that she always wants to do things and be a part of everything.
"Even in PE at school, when they are doing gymnastics, she'll do it her own way, she won't just sit down and give up.
"She's just a happy and very confident child.
"We are thankful and blessed."
Despite difficulties with her legs, Aya decided to take on a 5K cycling challenge for charity during the summer lockdown - learning to ride a bike for the very first time.
Yussur said: "She chose the charity herself and raised about £1,200 for the Make a Wish Foundation.
"All the community came out and clapped for her.
"For her, it wasn't Couch to 5k, it was Learning to Ride a Bike to 5k!"
Aya did not stop there and volunteered at The Dunham Barn in December as one of Santa's elves, helping to make Christmas magical for visiting families.
Amy Walsh from the Altrincham-based attraction made this experience possible, and mum Yussur was incredibly grateful.
She said: "It's not only the most wonderful time of the year, but to show a child that life has no limits by giving them the best opportunity is what makes our community so special.
"Aya got a job like all the other girls she knew and felt completely involved.
"She had her own cosy seat in the grotto to meet and tell the children a story, and then sing for them.
"Most important for her was to be in charge of the snow machine button which made every child feel so special."
Yussur has paid thanks to Planet Ice Altrincham for boosting her daughter's confidence.
In 2019, the youngster took her first steps on the ice thanks to head coach Donna McCarthy.
She has since been her 'fairy godmother' and helped to boost her confidence both on and off the ice.
Yussur stressed that her daughter would not be the confident little girl she is without Grappenhall Heys Primary School in Appleton Thorn.
"The school has done so much for her and has supported her, kept her happy and helped her thrive," praised Yussur.
"Also, her one-to-one support with Mrs Stansfiend, who has been her main support in everything since she was in reception.
"There are little things which people wouldn't appreciate unless they have a child who is disabled or has challenges."
