A DOG-WALKER from Great Sankey is making and selling bandanas for dogs and cats to raise money for a volunteer-run animal rescue shelter.

Jessica Lucy, 28, makes a donation to Warrington Animal Welfare every year around Christmas time but was inspired to raise more money this year after seeing a post from the shelter about a lack of donations.

The shelter usually benefits from lots of fundraisers but this has not been possible this year due to the pandemic and lockdown.

Jessica said: “I just wanted to do something for Warrington Animal Welfare.”

So far she has raised £200 in sales through her Facebook page Wags & Whiskers Walks, with customers across Warrington, Widnes, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Jessica said she didn’t expect to make that much but has set no end date to her fundraising efforts and hopes to raise as much money as possible.

She was also inspired to fundraise for the shelter as the proud owner of a rescue dog called Acer.

She said: “I know there’s other dogs not as fortunate but that are getting the best care from Warrington Animal Welfare.”

The animal-lover is making all of the products herself despite never making anything with a sewing machine before, so said it took a lot of practice.

The bandanas come in sizes extra-small and small for £5 and medium and large for £6, with 100 per cent of the money going to the shelter.

Jessica asks customers to bank transfer her for each sale and she plans to make one big donation to the shelter closer to Christmas.

The money will be used to provide food, bedding and health treatments such as neutering for the animals under the shelter’s care.

Jessica became a dog-walker earlier this year after struggling to find a suitable walker for her high energy border collie called Otto who requires daily, off-the-lead exercise.

She now specialises in high energy breeds in the Great Sankey and Penketh areas and has availability.

Jessica plans to give all of her clients a free bandana as a Christmas present for their pets.
