POLICE have been left baffled after dozens of ornamental elephants were mysteriously left on the doorsteps of homes in St Helens.

In total, 64 sculptures were placed outside houses on Vincent Street in the town on Thursday night.

The incident was reported to Merseyside Police by concerned residents.

A force spokesman said: “64 ornamental elephants are now in our custody after being mysteriously left on the doorsteps of house on Vincent Street in St Helens overnight between Thursday and Friday, causing concern for some residents.

“If you know why, contact us and quote log 0845 of November 28.”
