HOSPITALITY and leisure businesses hammered by two lockdowns and tight Covid-19 rules in Warrington have been sharing their reaction to the town moving into 'tier 2'.

Restrictions in Warrington will be relaxed when the second national lockdown lifts on December 2.

All restaurants, shops, leisure services and soft play centres as well as salons and hairdressers will be able to reopen. Pubs will also be able to unlock their doors if they are offering a substantial meal with alcohol.

It is a marked change from when Warrington entered 'tier 3' restrictions on October 27 when most non-essential services were closed and socialising was severely restricted.

Among those celebrating are Paul and Sarah Lott, who run The Jungle soft play centre.

The Pinners Brow Retail Park centre had to close between March 21 and September 1 and then from October 27 to present due to the lockdowns and tier rules.

Sarah said: "We're absolutely delighted to be able to open again. We've already had hundreds of messages from happy parents who can't wait to get back.

"That said, we still aren't allowed to hold birthday parties and must restrict the numbers who can play so we are still in a position where our future is still uncertain.

"Even when we are open we have to operate at 40 per cent capacity so it’s a real struggle.

"Our huge building has a rateable value of over £51,000 so that means we didn’t qualify for the initial grant back in March. We hope that we continue in 'tier 2' as I’m not sure the business could sustain another lockdown."

Meanwhile, Warrington Market will be reopening its popular Cookhouse when the lockdown lifts.

Andy Kinsella, from burger bar Cafe at the End of the Universe, added: "It's just a relief more than anything. We know that with the precautions we have in place we are as safe as anywhere.

Warrington Guardian:

"We are just excited to get back to serving burgers to the awesome people of Warrington."

Ian Cox, Golden Square director, described it as a 'relief' for the town to be in 'tier 2' but added that it would still be 'tough few months for retail'.

He said: "It's a relief for a lot of people and businesses but it's vital that we continue the hard work that has been done already.

"Most importantly, people who are coming out shopping over the next few weeks must respect each other and continue to wear face coverings and socially distance.

"It's still going to be a really tough few months for retail, and in particular the hospitality sector.

"More than ever it's vital for people in Warrington to shop local and support businesses on the high street in town this Christmas."

Over in the hospitality sector, it has been a nerve-wracking week for Ross McCrickerd.

He is the new owner of The Rams Head in Grappenhall and after finishing an extensive refurbishment he didn't know until now whether he could show it off to customers after lockdown.

Ross said: "While we will still be operating under restrictions I am really pleased that we can open our doors again next week and show off the new Rams Head.

"It is very apparent that everyone is wanted to get back to normal - we will be ready and also ensuring that we are operating safely."

Former Priestley College student Marc Smith, from Terrace Bistro, told his Facebook followers that the rollercoaster week has gone from him considering permanently closing his business to preparing to reopen the doors.

And Christmas is coming early to celebrate – with the festive menu available every day.

He added: What an emotional week – I’ve gone from planning the potential permanent closure of the business to being able to open up the doors from 1pm on Wednesday.

"Bookings now being taken – and you can enjoy a proper evening until 11pm! Please come and help us celebrate Christmas at the Terrace Bistro, we got a lot of catching up to do with our awesome guests."

It's also been a rollercoaster year for Jenny Arnot from Bold Street House which temporarily closed while Warrington was under 'tier 3' restrictions.

The Cultural Quarter cocktail and wine bar will be relaunching on December 3 – fresh out of lockdown.

Jenny said: "We're so pleased we aren't in tier 3. We're disappointed we will miss out on the Christmas parties this year but if it keeps people safe then it's worth it and we'll make sure next year will be bigger and better.

Warrington Guardian:

"We can't wait to get open again on Thursday and look forward to a busy festive period."

Evergreen Cafe – a floating vegan eatery on a narrowboat on the Bridgewater Canal in Lymm – is relaunching on Monday.

The mother and daughter team Kate Walsh and Olivia Sweeney will just be offering take-outs while they find their feet but they are pleased the relaxed rules give them more flexibility.

Olivia said: "We are very happy that Warrington has been placed in tier 2 and glad that we can start to welcome people in doors as well as serving take-outs.

"As it’s been a long time since we were last open, for the foreseeable future we will keep operating as a takeaway with the option of outside seating and once we get back on our feet we will look forward to having people sat indoors again."
