A FORMAL application for the demolition of the Chalon Way multi-storey car park block has been drawn up.
The Star reported in September when the council's cabinet said it has agreed plans to use £1m of funding from central government in advance of a Town Deal to demolish the car park.
The council regards the car park as a “key site for transformation”.
They believe demolishing it will create opportunities to make the Sankey Canal more visible for the rest of the town centre and also as an attractive redevelopment site.
A council statement read: “As part of the £1m grant approval any projects using this money needs to be spent by March 31, 2021.”

Formal plans for the demolition of the multi-storey car park, along with new street lighting and external works to the retained site on Chalon Way West have been submitted.
A pre-demolition report in the plans states: "In conclusion we consider this building can be safely demolished using conventional demolition methods, starting from the roof structure working downwards towards ground level and then foundation level".
A standard consultation on the plans lasts until Thursday, November 19.
