WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has backed the campaign by England striker Marcus Rashford to expand the free school meals service.

The Manchester United forward successfully lobbied Government to reverse its position on continuing to provide free meals during the summer holidays in June.

Now his petition calling on the Government to expand their provision, has been signed by more than 250,000 people.

He is campaigning for the scheme to be extended to school holidays and all children whose family receive universal credit,

Last week Labour’s shadow education secretary Kate Green announced that the party will press for a vote on this in the House of Commons.

Charlotte Nichols, MP for Warrington North, is backing the call.

She said: "With almost two and a half thousand children in Warrington North eligible for free school meals, I wholeheartedly support Marcus Rashford’s fantastic campaign on expanding the provision of free school meals.

"Marcus’ campaigning on this is truly inspirational and a credit to our region.

"This is especially important given the impact that the removal of the furlough scheme will have on unemployment and the existing pressures on the Universal Credit system and Warrington Foodbank.

"I will do everything I can in Parliament to fight to ensure that no child, whether in Warrington or across the country, goes hungry at school."
