REMEMBRANCE Sunday events would still be able to go ahead in Cheshire West and Chester under 'tier two' coronavirus lockdown rules.

Protests and births are also listed among a number of possible gatherings exempt from the new restrictions, which could come into force across the borough tomorrow (October 14).

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's proposed three-tiered system of local 'COVID Alert Levels' will be debated and voted on in the House of Commons today.

He confirmed yesterday that the levels will be set at medium, high, and very high. Cheshire West and Chester has been put in the high level, also known as tier two.

According to the Government's proposed regulations, indoor or outdoor gatherings to commemorate Remembrance Sunday, which is on November 8, can go ahead but attendance must be limited to:

  • Persons there as part of their work
  • Persons providing voluntary services in connection with the event
  • Members of the Armed Forces
  • Veterans of the Armed Forces or their representatives or carers
  • Spectators who participate in the gathering alone or as a member of a qualifying group, and

It also states that the gathering organiser or manager must take the required precautions in relation to the event.

Protests are also exempt as long as they are organised by a business, a charitable, benevolent or philanthropic institution, a

public body or a political body, and the gathering organiser takes the required precautions.

Under tier two rules, births are exempt if the person concerned is attending a mother giving birth at her request.

Other exemptions include elite sports, legal obligations and proceedings, and visiting a dying person.
