Frank Lythgoe’s Warrington Anglers Association column

CHRIS Savage enjoyed his first visit to Rixton Claypits this week despite horrible weather conditions and a slow start – it took over an hour before his first bite, which resulted in a bream of around two pounds.

Another blank half-hour followed before a tench which gave him a few hairy moments lay in his landing net. Three bream and two more tench completed his four-hour session. All fish fell to a small ground-bait feeder and double maggot.

As he stated, “Its better being wet on the bank rather than miserable at home.” Never thought of it that way!

Our bailiffs at Wigan report that sport has understandably slowed at this time of the year but at Woodshaw Reservoir, roach and skimmers are still being caught to small baits with just the odd crucian showing.

At Mowpin, sport is reasonable with silvers being caught along with the occasional carp. C & D Pools are still worth a visit with fish showing on both.

Our Sunday Mersey match series was fished this week on the Victoria Park stretch of the river, but with heavy rain and flooded conditions it was hardly surprising that there was another drop in weights from the previous week and not helped by a guest appearance by Sammy the Seal.

Winner Chris Wray persevered and stuck it out on feeder and worm for a net of mainly roach and a hybrid weighing in at 5lbs 2ozs 0drs.

Derek Bibby was close on his heels with 5-1-0 of roach taken on bolo and maggot. A total of 21 anglers fished.

Our disabled and over 60s Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Granthams Bridge in Lymm.

Ray Boden drew on the wood, which seems to hold a few more fish and put together an all-roach catch of 6-4-0 taken on the pole alternating between bread, pinkie, and caster.

The runner-up came from the adjacent peg, where Alan Clarke was only two ounces behind Ray with 6-2-0. Seventeen fished.
