THIS week has seen customers at pubs across the country having to abide by a new set of rules as part of new coronavirus restrictions.

And one St Helens boozer has had the help of a former England football manager to spell out the rules for its punters.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was the England boss between 2001 and 2006, gave a message to customers at the Gerard Arms in Dentons Green.

This week Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out new rules for pubs, including for customers to wear face masks upon entering and when not seated at a table, and a mandatory closing time of 10pm.

The Swedish football manager, who has had spells in charge of clubs including Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio, Manchester City and Leicester City among others.

He was England manager for five years, leading the team into the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups and Euro 2004.

In the video, published today, Friday, Sven said: “Hello everybody visiting the pub, The Gerard Arms in St Helens.

“This is a message from Sven Eriksen. We all live in difficult times all over the world and I think we have to follow the authorities’ advice on how to fight against the corona."

The 72-year-old added: “Please wear a face mask when entering the pub. To enjoy the sport and the good atmosphere, simply take off the mask when seated and enjoy the great beer and food. Very good!

“Take care everybody, goodbye from Sven.”
