VISITORS to Pennington Flash are urged to avoid contact with the water at a section of Pennington Flash due to toxic algae.

The council has issued a warning to residents over the issue.

The local authority says it is aware of blue-green algae at Pennington Flash, limited to the lagoon entrance.

Signposts will be put up as a warning people, the council says.

Visitors are urged to avoid contact with the water and to ensure any animals they have with them also do not go in the water.

Blue-green algae can produce potent toxins which result in a range of health effects in people and animals.

Effects on people coming into contact with toxic scums include skin rashes, eye irritations, vomiting and diarrhoea, fever and pains in muscles and joints.

In a statement on Facebook, Wigan Council said: "We are aware of localised blue-green algae at Pennington Flash, limited to the lagoon entrance.

"Signs will be posted around the area today.

"Please be vigilant and ensure you and any animals avoid contact with the water."
