A POLICE investigation has now been launched into a spectator incident at this week's Warrington Town FA Cup tie.

In the immediate aftermath of the Yellows' penalty shoot-out loss to South Shields on Tuesday night, a spectator entered the playing field and appeared to confront the visiting team.

"Officers have been made aware of an allegation of a racially aggravated offence at a football match between Warrington Town FC and South Shields FC," said a Cheshire Police spokesman.

"An investigation is now underway and enquiries are ongoing."

Town have pledged to ban any supporter identified as participating in the unsavoury incident.

After the game a Yellows statement said they will review video footage of the incident and take the appropriate action.

The club statement read: "The club has been made aware of an incident that took place at the end of tonight’s game against South Shields.

"Video footage is being reviewed and the perpetrator, once identified, will be banned from attending games at Cantilever Park.

"We have enjoyed a healthy rivalry with South Shields over recent years on the pitch, and we will not allow the actions of any individual to undermine that.

"Not only that, this behaviour threatens to undo the good work done by the club to ensure the return of fans for the start of this season."
