Transition Northwich launches interactive fruit foraging map

Transition Northwich has launched a new map for people to record the location of fruiting trees and popular foraging areas.

It is hoped the map will encourage residents to enjoy locally-grown fresh food on their doorstep – and free of charge.

Anthony Powell, trustee at Transition Northwich, said: "I’ve loved foraging for years, from lowly ground elder – delicious steamed – to apples, pears and nuts.

"They're as fresh as you can get, the trees haven't been sprayed, and they can be surprisingly good.

"Many of the apples come from former gardens, or have grown from cores tossed in the wayside.

"So enjoy their bounty, and if you’ve enjoyed them, cast your cores where they might grow to surprise and delight future generations."

The map also shows sites in Northwich where people can learn more about growing their own food.

They include the Dane Valley Community Orchard, which is open all year round for residents to collect apples and fruit, and the newly-opened Rod's Secret Garden – including a vegetable patch and greenhouses where volunteers can share gardening skills and socialise with easy social distancing.

Both sites are cared for by Transition Northwich, and coordinator Alison Allum says there are many benefits to getting involved.

She said: "Our green spaces are maintained by volunteers, some of whom have their own gardens but are interested to share their skills and time. We have volunteers of all ages and interests.

"Making a commitment to attend once a week, or once a month, is a great way to maintain fitness and enjoy the outdoors and notice the subtle seasonal changes each time you visit.

"Our gardening clubs offer the perfect antidote to Zoom fatigue. Gardening is proven to boost your mood and is particularly good way to strengthen your mental health."
