A MAN has died after a car went over the Greyhound roundabout in Leigh before crashing into trees last night, Saturday.

A Mercedes A200 was travelling east along the East Lancashire Road at around 11pm when it approached the Greyhound Roundabout and travelled straight through it and hit trees.

A passenger in the car – a 30-year-old man – died at the scene.

A man aged 29 was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Constable Karl Horner of Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this dreadful time.

“They are being supported by specialist officers while our investigations continue.

“It’s vital that anyone with information, who witnessed the crash or saw the car prior to the collision gets in touch.

“We would also ask that anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage that can assist us contact police.”

Leigh Fire Station watch manager Brocklehurst said three fire engines were called and a bystander had put out a fire after a blaze broke out from the vehicle.

Firefighters were there for around two hours and police were also in attendance.

The road was shut eastbound on the East Lancashire Road between Atherleigh Way and the Greyhound roundabout following the collision.
