STRUGGLING families in Newton-le-Willows will be able to attend a school uniform bank in preparation for the beginning of the new academic year.

As it stands, the plans are for schools to reopen to all pupils in September, with the Government saying it is an “absolute priority”.

Newton and Earlestown Community Group (NECG) uniform bank has already helped more than 100 families since it launched in June.

So far the project has been run directly through the schools themselves, with all Newton-le-Willows schools signing up.

Now they have closed for the summer, families can book a timeslot to attend the uniform bank at Wargrave Emmanuel Church on Saturday, August 15.

“Following the success of NECG’s phase one project during lockdown, which delivered nearly 40,000 meals to vulnerable families, we wanted to address the issue of families struggling to get school uniform together in Newton-le-Willows,” said Cllr Seve Gomez-Aspron NECG’s vice chairman.

“Especially in difficult times and with a looming recession.

“We wanted to create a new service, rather than address issues already covered by the Government free school meals initiative or the council’s summer events programme.

“All local schools have signed up, and any families seeking assistance can contact their school who will then pass on the details to our group to help.

“We have helped more than 100 families so far, and have also provided links to other services that the families may find useful by working with the council, our local community centres and also job creation schemes.

“If anyone wants to donate, or use the scheme, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Donations can be made to The Victoria Pub and Newton Deli have agreed to accept any washed uniform donations during their opening hours.
