A FAMILY of six have completed a Lake District running challenge all from their Culcheth home.

The Hughes, Wilsons, and Harraps all took on The Montane Lakeland, which sees participants run for 50 or 100 miles over a weekend by completing ten-mile laps of the village.

It was all in aid of several charities, including Jacob’s Ladder which helps young people undergoing cancer treatment.

Janet Hughes, 60, said the lockdown made taking the challenge more accessible: “The two lads do it each year up in the Lakes, and last year my eldest daughter did it with them, they all did 50 together.

“So this year, with it being virtual, they managed to collar myself and my other two daughters in to do the 50 and the lads decided to do the 100.”

With the more traditional Montane Lakeland – which begins in Coniston and takes in Keswick and the whole of the Lakeland fells – culminating in a steep incline, the Culcheth six decided to replicate this final hurdle by climbing their own set of ladders at home.

Janet added: “Some of us went two nights without sleep, so we had to keep [those people] going – we had a station where they could get food and drink, and the girls and myself went out with the [men] for a ten mile walk every so often just to keep them going overnight.

“I did a stint of about 3am to 8am. It was still a challenge, I have still got a sore toe at the moment!”

Janet adds the biggest challenge was overcoming the lack of camaraderie that usually helps participants through the Montane Lakeland.
