A SHOPPER was left stunned when she found drugs stashed inside a chocolate treat she bought from a supermarket for her three-year-old nephew.

The four pack of Kinder Surprise was bought from the Lidl store on Fennel Street on Friday, July 17.

But once the customer opened the box, which she had been planning on giving to the toddler, four capsules filled with tablets were found inside instead of the usual chocolate eggs and toys.

Warrington Guardian:

She said that she was ‘absolutely disgusted’, adding: “This could have ended up being tragic if my nephew had got them before I had opened them.”

Cheshire Police is now investigating how the unknown drugs found their way onto the discount supermarket chain’s shelves.

A force spokesman said: “At 10.05pm on Saturday, July 18, police received a report from a member of the public who is believed to have found an unknown substance concealed in food after purchasing it from a supermarket.

“Officers are currently investigating the report and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Lidl told the Warrington Guardian that it had raised the issue with its suppliers.

Its spokesman said: “The issue has been passed onto the supplier to investigate.”

Meanwhile Ferrero, which makes Kinder Surprise, says that it is taking the discovery ‘very seriously’.

Warrington Guardian:

But it does not believe that the containers found inside the box are Kinder eggs.

A spokesman added: “We are aware of this issue and are taking it very seriously.

“We are in touch with the consumer to find out more.

“From the images we have seen, however, it appears that the capsules concerned are not from Kinder Surprise.”
