Blackburn MP Barbara Castle, then Minister for Transport, was at Shadsworth High School in her constituency in 1967 to launch a new road safety initiative for times when pupils were arriving and and leaving school.
A large stop sign barrier would halt the traffic while youngsters crossed the road.
