PLANS for a HGV fuelling site in Lymm have been withdrawn as concerns were raised over road safety.

Developers were looking to open the facility on Cliff Lane, close to Lymm Fire Station and the truck wash which opened last year.

But scores of objections were sent to Warrington Borough Council over the scheme.

The nearby Poplar 2000 services said there was no need for the extra facility, which would be a stone’s throw away..

While residents complained about the environmental and highways risks of lorries driving further down the A50 to access he site when they left the M6.

One said: “We are concerned that this bunkering application that is being proposed is right next to residential properties, the fire station and surrounding green belt.

“We have researched and nowhere else in this country has there been allowed to have large fuel and storage tanks next to private properties.

“If this application goes ahead it will be a 24/7 operation which will involve flood lighting and noise.

“The site is far too small to accommodate large numbers of HGV vehicles.

“There is a motorway service area opposite which caters for HGV vehicles and has a sixteen lane bunkering and fuel operation.”

However scores of letters of support were also sent to the council.

Hundreds signed a petition calling for the application to be approved.

But council highways chiefs raised real concerns about the bid.

They said: “ The proposed refuelling station utilises the same access arrangements to the A50 Cliff Lane as the truck wash with access to the refuelling area gained some 120m away from the A50 access point.

“Since the truck wash opened in October 2019 complaints have been received about HGVs queuing back along the site access on to the carriageway of the A50, impacting on the movement of vehicles along the route and causing other HGVs unable to enter the site to perform inappropriate manoeuvres to head westbound towards Lymm.”

“It is also considered that the proposed development would unnecessarily increase the number of heavy goods vehicles performing inappropriate manoeuvres in the vicinity of the site. services and the M6.”

It was withdrawn last week.
