A PRIVATE tutor based in Oxford is launching a subscription service designed to make learning fun.

Jemma Zoe Smith, director of tuition agency The Education Hotel, is now helping parents that are teaching their kids through subscription boxes.

My School Boxes will come in two forms - themed boxes and revision boxes - with the service set to launch at the end of the month.

Miss Smith, 28, said: “Since lockdown a lot of parents have been getting in touch with me saying they’ve been struggling to keep their children on track with with school work.

“This is because some schools are not sending enough work or maybe even too much.

“The idea is not to replace schools but re-engage kids with the fun things in school which is maybe what they’re missing out on at the moment.

“The fun things like projects is what kids are missing out on if they’re not at school.”

The themed boxes contain 14 different learning tasks and are designed to help parents who are currently homeschooling.

The boxes also aim to support families when children head back to school as well, offering fun learning opportunities that go alongside formal school learning.

“Every month, parents will get a choice of three themes, with the first three being cinema, dinosaurs and magic, with each theme available for different age groups,” said Miss Smith.

“The idea is to get students thinking but something that’s also fun and involves their interests.”

Meanwhile, the revision boxes set out to help students with exams, offering revision tips, daily tasks, stationery and even some fun treats.

Miss Smith said: “At the minute, the revision boxes are for the 11 plus and as of September, we’ll be doing a GCSE version.

“They’re designed so that the student can take control of their revision schedule themselves.

“The boxes are something you should be excited to receive in the post and to begin learning.”

For the last eight years, The Education Hotel has been supporting students, with the new boxes drawing on the experience of over 40 tutors in and around Oxford.

“I believe tuition should be bespoke and personalised. We regularly check in with families and support children beyond merely providing a tutor,” explained Miss Smith.

“In normal circumstances, we offer both one to one and online tuition, and also help families to find schools and universities for their children.

“It’s been a little bit different during lockdown with some students taking daily tuition with us and we’ve been running webinars offering suggestions on how to make learning fun.

“I love tutoring and I’m regularly inspired by my students.”

Although the prices are yet to be finalised, Miss Smith estimates the boxes will be roughly £30 each.

She graduated from Oriel College at the University of Oxford in 2013, having studied her undergraduate and Master’s degree in Biochemistry.

She then returned to the university in 2017 to gain her PGCE in secondary science.
