A MOTORIST has been arrested after a serious crash which closed Winwick Road this morning.

The A49 was shut northbound between junction nine of the M62 and Cromwell Avenue following the incident shortly after 6.30am today, Thursday.

Eyewitnesses reported a huge police presence, with paramedics also on the scene near to the Motormill car dealership.

A car and a bicycle were involved in the collision, with the rider of the latter having been rushed to Aintree Hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old man from Warrington, has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences – including driving under the influence of drugs and possession of a class A drug.

Heavy traffic was reported as a result, with motorists having been warned to avoid the area.

But the route was then reopened at around 11am.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 6.30am, police were called to reports of a collision on the A49 Winwick Road between Cromwell Avenue and junction nine of the M62.

“Officers attended the scene and found there had been a collision between a car and a cyclist near to Motormill car showroom – the cyclist is believed to have sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

“The driver of the car, a 41-year-old local man, has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences – Including drug driving and possession of a class A drug."
