FROM prep to sixth form, a Colwyn Bay school has enlisted its pupils to help manufacture vital supplies for the NHS.

Prepatory school siblings Emily and Harry Nurse, year five pupils at Rydal Penrhos have been taking time during their remote learning to make protective masks with mother Fiona, who is a radiation therapist at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan.

Their efforts join those of Sixth Form pupil Jamie Lavery, who joined forces with design technology teacher Mark Harmsworth and technician James Bonser on a PPE project which has supplied more than 2,000 protective masks and 500 sets of protective eye glasses.

Fiona, said: “I just want to say a massive thank you from myself and all the other Radiation Therapists in the department at Glan Clwyd cancer centre for the masks provided by Rydal Penrhos.

“We really appreciate the hard work and dedication required to produce these masks. Emily and Harry have been missing the school and Mrs Chamberlain lots but have been busy helping me to make these masks up for the hospital - it’s great to have some helpers.

“They know they are helping to keep mummy and all the staff safe.”

Another brother-sister team have been busy making masks from their comfort of their own home, with Llion and Sophie Morris also taking time in-between their remote learning to aid the cause.

The school has also opened its boarding accommodation to critical keyworkers, in addition to their community keyworker childcare provision.

Senior School head Sally Ann Harding, said: “Keyworker staff across the country are doing some extraordinary work during a time of crisis and we are only too happy to help in whatever way we can.

“We have always been extremely proud of our community involvement here at Rydal Penrhos, which is more significant than ever throughout the coronavirus pandemic.”
