BIRTH registrations in Warrington have been suspended because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Warrington Borough Council says it will be in place ‘until we are through the current pandemic period’.

It is a legal requirement for parents to register a birth within 42 days after the baby is born.

This should be done at a registry office in the area where the child is born and carried out in person either by both parents or one of them.

However, the suspension has been brought in because of the coronavirus crisis.

Notices of marriage and civil partnerships are also suspended during the current period.

But wedding notices are valid for 12 months so ceremonies can be postponed if the venue is not able to hold the event.

A council spokesman said: “We have made this decision, based on Government advice, to protect our staff and residents, and to direct resources to the most vital services.”

Despite the changes to services, the council has emphasised that claims for child benefit and universal credit can still be made.

Furthermore, residents can book an appointment to register a death online or call Contact Warrington on 443322.

If anyone needs to register a death caused by Covid-19, they should contact the Register Office on 442762 before booking an appointment.
