EVERY month, the Warrington Guardian takes a look back at some of the most shocking and bizarre crimes reported to police in the town over the past few weeks.

Here are eight such incidents from Warrington during March:

Double stabbing

Two unrelated stabbings during one night, only metres away from each other, shocked the town this month. 

The first of these incidents came at around 9pm on Friday, March 6, when a 24-year-old man was attacked as he was walking through Brickfields Park with his partner.

He was assaulted by two attackers armed with a knife, with no arrests having yet been made over the incident.

Winwick Road was shut in the aftermath, leaving nearby roads gridlocked after Warrington Wolves’ Super League clash with Castleford Tigers at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Then, at around 3.15am on March 7, a man was slashed with a 14-inch machete outside McDonald’s further along the A49.

The victim had to undergo a 10-hour operation in order to save one of his hands.

Twenty-one-year-old Jordan Hughes, of Calgarth Avenue in Bewsey, has since been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm in connection with this second incident.

Arson attack on pub

The Fiddle I’th Bag pub in Burtonwood was targeted during an arson attack shortly after midday on Sunday, March 8.

‘Extensive damage’ was called to the derelict building on Alder Lane, with the fire believed to have been started deliberately.

Unwanted donation for charity shop

A drunk man was arrested after pooing outside a town centre charity shop.

The offender ‘left the contents of his bowels’ outside the British Heart Foundation store on Bank Street before abusing officers who attended the scene on the evening of Friday, March 6.

Thirty-two-year-old Thomas Llewellyn, of Fitzwalter Road in Woolston, was later charged with being drunk and disorderly in connection with the incident.

Terrifying raid by masked gang

A gang of masked men raided a house and smashed up the property during a terrifying raid in Orford.

Several intruders wearing face coverings broke into the occupied home on Laira Street via the back door shortly before 8.30pm on Sunday, March 1.

The offenders caused damage to the kitchen, but fled when one of the occupants told them that there were police officers outside.

They were left 'extremely shaken up' by the incident.

Shots fired at house

Gunshots were fired at a house in Hood Manor late on Friday, March 20.

Three people were inside the property on Reaper Close when it was targeted at around 10.15pm.

The discharge of the firearm caused damage to a wall inside, but the occupants were unharmed.

Attempted murder charge

The morning after the shots were fired, there was another major incident in Warrington.

A man suffered serious injuries after being hit in the head with a meat cleaver on Old Liverpool Road in Sankey Bridges.

Warrington Guardian:

This 'horrific assault' occured at around 11.15am on Saturday, March 21.

David Laponda, a 35-year-old man from Stockport, has since been charged with attempted murder.

Masked robber's knifepoint raid

A clothes shop was raided by a masked robber brandishing a knife on the morning of Tuesday, March 10.

The offender entered VC Industrial Clothing and Uniformity on Lovely Lane shortly after 9.15am oand threatened two members of staff with the weapon, demanding that they hand over cash from the till.

He fled the store empty-handed after the employees refused, with Cheshire Police having issued CCTV footage of the attacker.

NHS worker abused

Three teenagers were detained by police after coughing at an NHS worker at Warrington Bank Quay.

Officers attended the scene at around 9pm on Friday, March 27.

Two 18-year-old women and a 12-year-old girl were held, having also allegedly been abusive towards the health service staff member.

They were then taken to their home addresses and ‘spoken to regarding the new public health regulations to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic’.
