AN Indian restaurant dished out free meals to the town’s homeless and vulnerable residents before closing its doors because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bombay 8 in Westbrook, off Charon Way, provided fresh hot food to Room at the Inn and the Y Project in the town centre, on Winmarleigh Street, as well as Haven House, on Lovely Lane, last Tuesday.

Manager Mofozul Miah said: “I came to the restaurant thinking what am I going to do with all the food that would be left behind after we close.

“It was so sad to think about throwing the food away, then I rang Mo Hussain, from Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA), and I spoke to him and he gave me a lot of information regarding what is required in the town and about those who are in need.

“I then decided the best idea would be to serve it to people in need in Warrington. Warrington has been great for us.”

Food included biryani and balti dishes, as well as rice and salad, for more than 50 people.

Room at the Inn and the Y Project centre manager Susan Blyth thanked Bombay 8.

She said: “It is very kind of you to think of us during these difficult times.”

WECA supported the restaurant in providing the curries to the two sites.

Secretary Mo Hussain said: “It is a wonderful gesture from Mofozul and Bombay 8, who reached out to help the homeless and those in need during this difficult time.

“The food was well received and greatly appreciated.

“It is really wonderful to see community spirit like this in action, particularly during these unprecedented and difficult times we are facing.

“We’ve also managed to do the same for the Homeless Support Project in Leigh, who received freshly cooked food from the Chennai Indian restaurant.”
