POLICE have again warned drivers not to speed on North Wales' roads during the current coronavirus outbreak after a car was clocked at 101mph.

Just because the roads are quieter, say police, it doesn't mean it is safe to speed or that they will not enforce the law on people foolish enough to do so.

The incident took place today (March 27) on the A5 at Ty Nant.

North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "The roads are quiet but no excuse to be driving like a fool. @GoSafeCymru caught a car doing 101mph on the A5 Ty Nant this morning

"NHS colleagues are under extreme pressure and the last thing we need is to be dealing with a road traffic road collision. Think."

North Wales Police have repeated the message several times this week as bikers and motorists have continued to come to the region despite the guidance to travel only if absolutely necessary.

A police spokesperson said: “Despite being asked to stay at home, we are still seeing people drive at high speeds on some of our roads – this includes motorcycles too. Maybe it’s because there’s less traffic on the roads? Maybe it’s because some are still taking advantage of the good weather? There is no excuse.”

“Enforcement will continue. We are still out there keeping an eye on the roads. Please heed the warning. The last thing we need is to deal with a road traffic collision.”

The stretch of the A5 between the villages of Ty Nant and Dinmae is notorious for speeding, with cars clocked at speeds of more than 120mph in recent years.

Meanwhile, Wrexham Rural police officers are carrying out vehicle checks in the county to make sure motorists' journeys are essential and to pass on the latest guidance on social distancing.

The team tweeted: "Please ensure your journey is essential for work or necessary food supplies."
