A CUSTOMER claims a supermarket sold her more than a hundred mouldy tins of dog food which made her pets ‘extremely ill’.

Jemma Farrar, from Barrow, purchased 240 tins of dog food from Asda’s online shopping service for her four Staffordshire terriers.

However, Ms Farrar said two of her pets quickly became ‘extremely unwell’ with vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming the products.

She said: “I keep my dog food in my front room and at first all was fine. Then two of my dogs became extremely unwell with vomiting and diarrhoea

“I had no idea what had caused it until I opened a tin of their dog food and noticed half way through the food was green and soggy.”

Ms Farrar began hunting through the rest of her shopping to discover ‘more than a hundred’ tins of dog food infested with mould.

She said: “I recalled a similar smell that I could not seem to find in my front room and went through my dog food tins.

“I would say out of 240 tins that 100 plus were full and half full of green sludge.

“It was green, white and foamy - the smell was horrendous.”

Ms Farrar said she contacted Asda about the mouldering dog food but received no response.

She said: “I’ve had a conversation with Asda a few weeks ago but heard nothing since.”

Mrs Farrar is warning other pet owners to remain vigilant of mouldy products.

“I have no idea why this was like this but I’d hate to think of other dogs getting sick because of this,” she said.

A spokesman for Asda said: “We always want to provide great quality products for our customers and we are at a miss to understand how this could have happened.

“Whilst we haven’t received any other complaints of mould in our dog food, we are trying to get in contact with Ms. Farrar so we can get the product back and fully investigate. From our initial investigations, we do know that if a sealed can is damaged and air is let in, then this kind of mould can form if left for a period of time, but as long as the seal is intact it not possible for mould to grow.”
