CAMERA crews are set to investigate reports of ghostly goings-on at a historic pub.

The ghost of a man has been sighted supping pints of beer in the Marquis of Granby on Church Street over the past two years.

He has been seen entering the snug from an area off limits to the public and sitting down with his pint before vanishing.

Now documentary makers are setting up cameras in the pub – which dates back to around 1600 – in a bid to capture footage of the phantom, with filming set to begin next month.

Warrington Guardian:

Andy Halton, from the series’ producers Dark Corporation, said: “We’re going to set up CCTV in the snug area, because we do know from reports in the past two years that a gentleman has been seen sitting there having a pint.

“Apparently he comes out of an area which is not open to the public, sits down with his beer and then disappears.

“We’re going to see if we can get him on film.”

Historian Dr David Harrison, from Winwick, is also helping to put the two 12-part series together.

He said: “There are so many historical pubs out there, and the hauntings are something that is linked to the history.

“The Marquis of Granby is a fantastic old pub, a real hidden gem which has all these associations with the civil war.

“If you go in there, the first thing the regulars say is that you get glasses flying off the bar and all sorts of weird noises.

“There are plenty of old pubs like the Swan in Winwick, the Ring O’ Bells in Daresbury and the Ferry Tavern in Penketh which have similar stories.

“You can only imagine how many people have walked through the doors of these 200-year-old pubs and called them a second home, and you can feel that energy.

“When pubs close down these stories get lost forever, and that’s one thing that we want to capture.”

The makers of Haunted Pubs of England, which is due to be screened by top broadcasters in the UK and USA next year, are also looking for tip-offs on other pubs in the town which are believed to be haunted.
