A landlord found his 33-year-old lodger dead in his kitchen from self inflicted wounds, an inquest heard.

Marcin Kuczara was found by Mark Kay who had returned to his home at Pentrefelin, in Welshpool, on September 21, 2019 after a week-long holiday with family.

An inquest held on January 31 heard that the man was found with deep cuts to his limbs and neck. A post mortem concluded that he died from severe blood loss and a deep cut to his neck. No signs of drugs or alcohol were found, according to a toxicology report.

In a written statement read out at the inquest in Welshpool, Mr Kuczara’s colleague said he “feared” that the 33-year-old was suffering from a mental health breakdown three days before his death. Mr Kuczara told him that there was “bad energy” and that “demons were trying to get him”.

On September 21, Mr Kuczara’s landlord Mark Kay thought it was “very odd” to find the front door ajar.

Mr Kay said in a written statement: “I saw mud stains in the hallway which I thought was a bit odd because Marcin would take his work boots off before entering the house. It was actually blood.”

The inquest heard that Mr Kay found blood “everywhere” and was left “shocked” by the horrific sight.

He dropped his bags, ran out of the house and told his daughter and her boyfriend to ring 999.

Dyfed-Powys Police Constable Michael Clark said in a written statement, read out by the assistant coroner, that he saw a man lying on his back in the kitchen.

Blood was found “soaked” on the floor, on the walls and on bathroom tiles. He followed a trail of blood into a bedroom and found the bed and a mobile phone soaked in blood.

Assistant coroner Ian Boyes concluded that Mr Kuczara intended to take his own life owing to the number and severity of the self inflicted wounds.
