THE highest ranked sixth forms and colleges in St Helens have been revealed in the latest Government figures.

Rainhill High Sixth Form A-level students scored the best average grade (B-), higher than both the borough average (C) and the national average (C+) last year.

Students at Rainford High Technology College achieved the best AAB figures, which are A-levels commonly needed for entry to leading universities.

They achieved an AAB rate of 15.4 per cent in at least two subjects.

Rainford High Technology College principal Ian Young said: "We are delighted that the hard work of students and staff have been reflected in our sixth form results and we are all very proud of those students who have now moved on to the next stage of their careers and learning.

"At Rainford High we strive relentlessly to improve our students experience, opportunities and outcome year on year and will continue to do so with the best interests of our students central to our ethos of 'Everyone Matters, Everyone Helps and Everyone Succeeds'.

Hope Academy was "well above average" and Carmel College was "above average" in its progress score. The score measures the progress young people made from finishing their GCSEs to the end of their A-level studies, compared to similar students across England.

Carmel College principal Mike Hill says the figures have added to the college's consistency in its three-year plan and cements its position after being rated "outstanding" by education regulator Ofsted last year.

He said: "We are very pleased.

"We often get very positive results that are in the top 10 in the country in some areas.

"And we want to be in the top 10 for St Helens and Knowsley students to access."

Mr Hill added the college will be looking to make improvements to its results.

Meanwhile, St Helens College and Sutton Academy students' average grade was both D+ and they ranked as "below average" in their progress scores.

Overall, the average grade for St Helens A-level students was C and the AAB pass rate was 8.8 per cent - lower than the 16.5 per cent national average.
