WARRINGTON South Constituency Labour Party (CLP) has nominated Sir Keir Starmer to be the new Labour leader after ‘rejecting Corbynism’.

Members also voted to nominate Angela Rayner for the deputy post.

Cllr Tom Jennings (LAB – Bewsey and Whitecross) said: “Members here have consistently rejected Corbynism in every leadership ballot held.

“After losing the Penketh by-election in 2018, and our crushing defeat last year, I’m glad members have nominated a credible candidate who is a break from the past, can reconnect with voters we’ve lost and lead us forward into local elections this year.”

Warrington North CLP is yet to confirm its nominations.

As previously reported, Labour’s Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols is supporting Rebecca Long-Bailey in her bid to become leader.

The ballot will open on February 21, with the result to be announced on April 4.
