A POPULAR children's author has visited Great Sankey High School to encourage boys to read.

Tom Palmer, who has written more than 40 books, inspired 200 year seven and eight students with an exciting talk and workshop.

Many of his books are aimed at boys who are reluctant readers.

Comments from pupils included: "Tom Palmer is a brilliant author and a fantastic inspiration.

"He was very enthusiastic and his books are amazing.

"I enjoyed it when Tom read out part of his new book that hasn’t been published yet."

During the workshop sessions, students listened to Tom explain his planning and writing process, including how he conducts his research and helps with book cover designs and promotion.

All students had a chance to ask questions and buy a signed book.

A Great Sankey High School librarian said: "Holding events such as this help to promote literacy and reading for pleasure throughout the school.

"Tom’s books are hugely popular here and he created a fantastic atmosphere with his penalty shoot-out game and gave students an event to remember."
