Bebington Civic Centre will remain closed until March after the council took the decision to undertake remedial works on the whole building.

The village's central library was closed in mid-December for a routine check, but the building has been shut ever since, with local community events held on the premises grinding to a halt.

After investigation by the Globe, a joint statement providing by Bebington Ward councillors was issued.

They said: “The council has a planned programme of works to regularly survey our buildings where we know there is, or has been, asbestos.

"Bebington Central Library was closed on December 9-10 for its regular check and small amounts of asbestos residue were found outside the frames of the heaters and where nails had gone into a wall that had asbestos board inside.

"Several air tests were taken at the library as soon as the residue was found, and all the readings were negative. This meant that it was safe to be in the library.

"The decision was taken to close the library so that full remedial works could take place. This included a deep clean of the entire Civic Centre, which started on Monday 6th January.

"Bebington Civic Centre is at the heart of this community and we appreciate the disruption the closure has had on both individuals and community groups in Bebington.

"Works are now fully underway, and it is anticipated the building will re-open completely in early March. During this time, neighbouring libraries in Higher Bebington and Bromborough will remain open five days a week."
